Josie Rourke exits Donmar Warehouse with Sweet Charity revival

The minute you walked in the joint, I could see you were a man of distinction, a real Big Spender…

Artistic director, Josie Rourke leaves the Donmar Warehouse with a farewell production of Sweet Charity, starring Anne-Marie Duff and Arthur Darvill.

The show will be choreographed by the world-renowned Wayne McGregor, who reunites with Josie after working on her debut film, Mary Queen of Scots.

Josie returns to the music of Cy Coleman who wrote the score for Rourke’s Olivier Award-winning production of City of Angels. The book is by Neil Simon and lyrics by Dorothy Fields.

Josie Rourke said: “I’m so happy to be joined in my final production as Donmar Artistic Director by the luminous Anne-Marie Duff, making her musical theatre debut, and the great Wayne McGregor.

“They are two of the finest people, and collaborators I’ve worked with, and this reunion with them, and the music of Cy Coleman is a joyous way to end a dozen years as an Artistic Director from the Bush to the Donmar.”

New York, 1967. Charity Hope Valentine is a dance hall hostess who “runs her a heart like a hotel”. At the hopeless end of a long line of users and losers, she meets Oscar, a mild-mannered tax accountant, and Charity Hope Valentine once again puts her faith in love.

Anne-Marie Duff (Charity) returns to the Donmar Warehouse after previously starring in the productions of Berenice in 2012, directed by Josie Rourke, and Days of Wine and Roses in 2005.

An award-winning actress on both stage and screen, Anne-Marie is known for her roles in Shameless, The Virgin Queen and Nowhere Boy, and is considered one of the UK’s most prolific actresses.

In 2018 Anne-Marie starred in Heisenberg: The Uncertainty Principle and returned to the National Theatre as Lady Macbeth, a role she previously undertook on Broadway opposite Ethan Hawke.

Arthur Darvill makes his Donmar Warehouse debut in Sweet Charity. His theatre credits include Genesis Inc. (Hampstead), Treasure Island (National Theatre), Once (Broadway/West End), Our Boys (Duchess), Doctor Faustus (Shakespeare’s Globe) and Swimming with Sharks (Vaudeville).

Sweet Charity runs at the Donmar Warehouse from April 6 – June 8, 2019.
