Liza Goddard heads Everyman Cheltenham’s UK tour of A Passionate Woman

Popular stage and screen star, Liza Goddard heads the cast for Kay Mellor’s A Passionate Woman, a wistful romcom about love, passion and lost chances, which opens its UK tour at Cheltenham’s Everyman Theatre next month.

Liza (Bergerac, Yes Honestly) plays Betty, a passionate, doting mum who finds it hard to accept that her son is leaving home to get married.

On the morning of her son’s wedding, Betty retreats to her attic where she relives her long-lost youth and the love affair she had in the 1960s.

Surrounded by her memories and ghosts from her past, Betty finds herself torn between a husband she never loved, a son about to leave and the man she shared a passionate affair with.

Liza Goddard is joined by Antony Eden, Hasan Dixon and Russell Dixon.

Kay Mellor is well known as the creator behind TV’s In The Club, Fat Friends, Band of Gold and The Syndicate. A Passionate Woman was inspired by Mellor’s mother who confessed to her that she had previously had an affair with a Polish neighbour.

This is an updated production which changes the setting to reflect modern times and will be one of the first public performances of the updated script.

Paul Milton, the Everyman’s creative director, who directs this production, said: “A Passionate Woman is a real feel- good play. It has a Shirley Valentine flavour to it: lots of romance, comedy and charm.

“It’s set in the present day, but has flashbacks to the 1960s. Kay Mellor, is well-known to television audiences and the play was a West End hit in the 1990s. It was televised in 2010, when it starred Sue Johnston and Billie Piper. It’s the perfect play for a good night out.”
