A new stage musical of the iconic Summer Holiday is set to tour the UK from May with Ray Quinn starring in the role made famous by that Peter Pan of pop, Cliff Richard.
The famous red double-decker bus will be making its first stop at the Liverpool Empire on May 8.
Based on the 1960s film of the same name, that starred Cliff Richard and The Shadows, Summer Holiday has been adapted for the stage by Michael Gyngell and Mark Haddigan and will include all of the hits from the movie, plus some additional Cliff classics.
Taking on the lead role of Don is X Factor runner-up, singer and songwriter Ray Quinn.
Ray’s theatre credits include Danny Zuko in Grease (West End), Dirty Dancing (West End), Legally Blonde (UK Tour) and most recently, The Wedding Singer (UK Tour).
The role of Jerry, the long-suffering agent, will be played by Bobby Crush for the first eight weeks of the tour.
Famous in the UK for 45 years primarily as a pianist, but also as a songwriter, actor, broadcaster and television presenter, Bobby rose to fame after six winning appearances on Opportunity Knocks (ITV).
Bobby has appeared in four musicals starring as Dr Frank ‘n’ Furter in The Rocky Horror Show, Vernon Gersch in They’re Playing Our Song, LM in Pump Boys and Dinettes and Billy Flynn in Chicago at top theatres around the country.
Most recently, Bobby has been playing Billy Sparkle in the popular TV comedy Benidorm (ITV) and is part of the veteran ensemble currently appearing in ITV’s Last Laugh in Vegas.
They are joined by Sophie Matthew (Humans) plays runaway singer, Barbara; with Taryn Sudding (Cats, Annie, The Sound of Music) as Stella, her controlling fame-hungry mother.
Billy Roberts (Steve), Joe Goldie (Edwin) and Rory Maguire (Cyril) play Don’s fellow London Transport mechanics and Gabby Antrobus (Mimsie), Alice Baker (Alma) and Laura Marie Benson (Angie) play girl singing group ‘Do-Re-Mi!’
The cast is completed by Hannah Barr, Becky Bassett , Caroline Bateson, William Beckerleg, Adam Crossley, Sam Gallacher, Leanne Groutage and Matt Trevorrow.
Summer Holiday tells the story of Don and his fellow mechanics as they journey together in a red double-decker through Paris, the Alps, Italy and Greece.
Along the way they pick up a girl singing group and a young American pop star who is on the run from her domineering mother.
This hit – filled musical features many of 1960s biggest songs including In the Country, Summer Holiday,Travellin’ Light, Bachelor Boy, Move It, Living Doll, The Young Ones and On the Beach.
