Cumbria’s acclaimed Theatre by the Lake has announced a new partnership with York Theatre Royal and is transferring its full summer rep season of five shows, currently running at the Keswick venue, this November.
The transfer of the rep season follows on the heels of Theatre by the Lake’s co-production of Hymn to Love, which played at co-producer’s, York Theatre Royal, in April, and its production of The Secret Garden, which York is currently remounting as their summer family show, running from Friday.
The venture represents a marked shift in ambition for the Lake District-based theatre under the leadership of Conrad Lynch, who was appointed artistic director in late 2016.
Since 2017 the theatre has also undertaken co-productions with the Sherman Theatre, the Royal Exchange, and Jermyn Street Theatre, as well as Shared Experience with whom the 2017 production of As You Like It toured to five venues in the UK.
Billed as The Lakes Season, the transfer comprises of Jeeves & Wooster in Perfect Nonsense by the Goodale Brothers from the works of P.G. Wodehouse, directed by Philip Wilson; Single Spies by Alan Bennett, directed by Tom Littler; Sense & Sensibility by Jane Austen in an adaptation by Jessica Swale, directed by York Theatre Royal’s associate director Juliet Forster; the world premiere production of Rails by Simon Longman, directed by Clive Judd; and Bold Girls by Rona Munro, directed by Bobby Brook.
Conrad Lynch said: “We are thrilled to be piloting this unique partnership with York Theatre Royal, and really excited that our whole programme of work from 2018 thus far will have a future life beyond Keswick.
“York Theatre Royal is a wonderful venue, and, with the resurgence of interest in repertory theatre – highlighted by many, including our patron Dame Judi Dench and Sir Ian McKellen – it’s fantastic to have the opportunity to introduce other audiences to the joys of rep.”
Tom Bird, York Theatre Royal’s executive director, added: “The Lakes Season is an exciting part of our autumn/winter season that gives our audience the opportunity to see five top-class productions from another wonderful north of England producing house.
“Earlier this year the co-production of Hymn to Love, with Elizabeth Mansfield, proved an outstanding success with our audiences.
“And the remounting of The Secret Garden looks like being a big hit at York Theatre Royal this summer.
“We look forward to developing the special relationship between the two theatres in the future.”
Theatre by the Lake is one of a handful of theatres in the UK who utilise a rep model over the summer months, allowing visitors to the area the chance to see up to five different productions within one week, and the opportunity to see the same actors perform a variety of roles.
