Parents have all been there. Watching the kids move out is a rite of passage which we all have to go through at some point.
The Empty Nesters’ Club, a new play by BAFTA-Award-winning playwright John Godber, comes to Scarborough’s Stephen Joseph Theatre, in March as part of its UK tour.
Produced by The John Godber Company and Theatre Royal Wakefield, The Empty Nesters’ Club offers a humorous yet poignant look at the pain of that empty nest and what befalls parents after the children have outgrown the family home.
Newly bereft mum Vicky Barret, whose daughter has recently left for university in London, prepares for the inaugural meeting of her new support group, The Empty Nesters’ Club, by reflecting on the upheaval of letting go of her not-so-little girl.
Vicky shares her story of empty bedrooms, fresher’s flu, boyfriends, long goodbyes, motorway service stations and trips to Ikea; and how she fought back to be the woman she is today – exhausted!
Directed by John Godber, The Empty Nesters’ Club is performed by a cast of three: Robert Angell, Jane Hogarth and Josie Morley.
The Empty Nesters’ Club plays at the SJT March 13 – 18.
