Espionage, double-crossing and blackmail come to the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse this November with Anders Lustgarten’s The Secret Theatre, a new spy thriller with powerful contemporary echoes.
Spymaster Sir Francis Walsingham oversees a vast surveillance network from the heart of Elizabeth I’s court.
As the nation’s relationship with Europe deteriorates and civil unrest grows, Walsingham adopts ever more extreme tactics to keep his queen and country safe.
But does he risk losing control of the apparatus he has created and destroying the lives of those closest to him? And can such safety ever be achieved?
The premiere of The Secret Theatre will be directed by Matthew Dunster and star Aidan McArdle as Sir Francis Walsingham.
McArdle’s previous theatre work includes School for Scandal (Barbican), The White Devil (Menier Chocolate Factory), Great Expectations (Bristol Old Vic) and Anthony and Cleopatra (RSC).
Television credits include The Fall (BBC), Humans (Channel 4), Sense 8 (Netflix), Mr Selfridge (ITV) and Quirke (BBC).
Tara Fitzgerald will play Elizabeth I, returning to the Globe after appearing as Lady Macbeth in 2016.

The full cast comprises Tara Fitzgerald, Edmund Kingsley, Cassie Layton, Sam Marks, Aidan McArdle, David Partridge, Abraham Popoola, Ian Redford, Colin Ryan.
The Secret Garden runs from November 16 – December 16 in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, at The Globe.
