The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee comes to London’s Drayton Arms Theatre, in William Finn’s hilarious musical next month.
An American tradition, that is as homespun as apple pie, is a delightfully quirky, touching subject for a laugh-out-loud musical that celebrates the country’s competitive spelling championships.
An eclectic group of pre-teen children compete for the spelling championship of a lifetime, while also dealing with loneliness, pushy parents and pandemonium.
The students (and some plucky volunteers from our audience! Oh no! – ed) spell their way through a series of words.
Each hopes never to hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life ending “ding” of the bell that signals a mistake. Six spellers enter but only one speller can win!
This bee is a buzz, a riotous ride that combines a fast-paced and wildly funny book by Rachel Sheinkin, with a fresh and vibrant score by William Finn.
Following their acclaimed productions; When Midnight Strikes, Birds of Paradise, The Baker’s Wife and Lucky Stiff, MKEC Productions return to The Drayton Arms as they continue to bring high-quality stagings of lesser-known musicals to the London Fringe.
Directed by Adam Haigh The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee runs at the Drayton Arms Theatre from May 29 – June 16.
